Living in a small village like Hibberton, it\u2019s expected that your neighbours help you in a time of need. But when Andrea Kelly\u2019s house burns down, taking all her earthly possessions with it, it\u2019s the distant and aloof Doctor David Adams \u2013 the person she would least expect \u2013 who opens his door not just to her, but to her three kids and slightly dotty elderly mother as well.<\/p>\n

EXCERPT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know how you feel, David, do I? I don\u2019t know you, other than what you\u2019ve told me.\u2019<\/p>\n

David looked at her levelly. \u2018The truth.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018The truth?\u2019 Andrea was really incredulous now. \u2018Apart from the one or two inconsequential little things you forgot to tell me? Or was it more than that, David? Three? Four? A hundred?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Two! Twice. Bloody hell, Andrea \u2026\u2019<\/p>\n

And that made it all right? She forced back the tears she desperately didn\u2019t want to cry in front of him, again. \u2018And I thought Jonathan was being devious. You take the biscuit, David, you really do.\u2019 Shaking her head, Andrea moved to walk past him.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m nothing like Jonathan, Andrea,\u2019 David said quietly. \u2018I care about you.\u2019<\/p>\n

Andrea turned back. \u2018And Jonathan doesn\u2019t?\u2019 She knew in her heart that her relationship had been floundering long before the fire that had blown her world apart, before David \u2026 She didn\u2019t believe Jonathan\u2019s tale about why he hadn\u2019t been able to contact her any more than his claim to have found Dougal in the park. He\u2019d been piling lie on top of lie since that dreadful night, and she would tackle him. Right now, though, she was more interested in what lies this man might concoct to extract himself from his mess.<\/p>\n

\u2018Did he tell you the assessors had been?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I haven\u2019t had a chance to speak to him yet.\u2019 Andrea walked on.<\/p>\n

\u2018He\u2019s hiding something, Andrea,\u2019 David called after her. \u2018I\u2019m not sure what, but the fire, his preoccupation with Dee\u2019s mental state, his story \u2026 It just doesn\u2019t add up.\u2019<\/p>\n

Disbelieving, Andrea whirled around. \u2018You\u2019ll stop at nothing, will you? You paint yourself as a poor wounded hero, torn apart by grief and guilt and the havoc you <\/em>created, and then you have the nerve to point out other people\u2019s failings? Why?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Andrea, I \u2026 I don\u2019t know.\u2019 David shrugged hopelessly. \u2018I just want you to be careful, that\u2019s\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I mean, I\u2019m no great catch, am I?\u2019 Andrea went on, her fury growing. \u2018Was what just happened between us another one of your mistakes, is that it?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018No!\u2019 David fixed angry eyes on hers. \u2018Dammit, Andrea I do care about you. I\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m going.\u2019 Andrea turned away.<\/p>\n

\u2018Andrea, don\u2019t.\u2019 David caught her arm. \u2018Please. The kids \u2026\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Don\u2019t you dare, David,\u2019 Andrea warned him angrily. \u2018Don\u2019t you dare try to manipulate me through my children!\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018They\u2019re getting ready for bed, Andrea. There\u2019s no point in upsetting them tonight.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Me upsetting them?\u2019 Andrea was flabbergasted.<\/p>\n

\u2018Jake \u2026\u2019 David swallowed. \u2018Give me a chance to speak to him, Andrea. Please, I\u2019m begging you.\u2019<\/p>\n

Andrea felt her heart break inside her afresh, for Jake, for David, too, who was going to have to live with the devastating consequences of his actions; for Sally, who would surely need her friendship now, but which this man had made impossible. For herself.<\/p>\n

\u2018Stay,\u2019 David implored. \u2018Please? For tonight, at least.\u2019<\/p>\n

Andrea studied his face, saw the desperation in his eyes; eyes where so many conflicting emotions played out. How little did she really know him? She could have loved him. Did, still. Yet hated him.<\/p>\n

\u2018For Jake\u2019s sake,\u2019 she said, dropping her gaze to his hand still on her arm.<\/p>\n

Relief flooding his face, David released his hold. \u2018Thank you,\u2019 he said, closing his eyes.<\/p>\n
