He\u2019s a contestant on Jungle Survival<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOh my.\u201d Hattie smiled and wiped a spray of crumbs off her chest.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s at the airport with Bob; they\u2019re about to board a plane.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell I never.\u201d Hattie put her mug on the desk and stared at her friend. \u201cHow do you feel about that?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAstonished.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt might do him good.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOr not.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cFancy a bracer?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cStart pouring.\u201d<\/p>\n Cradling mugs of coffee, laced with a good slug of brandy, Jo and Hattie sat in the conservatory and looked out at the garden beyond.<\/p>\n \u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem five minutes since he was a little boy running all over this lawn with his brother,\u201d Jo said as she stared thoughtfully across the neatly manicured grass.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd now he\u2019s running off to Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n In the distance, a group of guests appeared from the meadow, where a clairvoyance course was being run in an old gypsy caravan. Originally horse-drawn, the caravan had been John\u2019s pride and joy, brightly painted with little wooden steps. It was a perfect setting for an intimate group. Boomerville hosted many courses for residents to enjoy and it was Jo\u2019s hope that a stay at the hotel would inspire middle-aged boomers and set them up with new and inspiring skills to use in their later years.<\/p>\n \u201cAnother successful event,\u201d Hattie said as she watched the beatific expressions of the participants as they drifted down the garden, confident that the spirits of their dead granny and Rover, the family pet, were beside them, whispering and woofing encouraging words from beyond.<\/p>\n \u201cI wish I could see into Zach\u2019s future,\u201d Jo replied. \u201cI hope he\u2019s not making a terrible mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWell, if he is, he\u2019s picked the right place to make it. That show\u2019s watched by millions. Perhaps we should run something similar here?\u201d Hattie closed her eyes and began to plan out a jungle camp, set in the meadow. \u201cThe old \u2018uns would love it! Prancing about like Bear Grylls, cooking over an open fire, sleeping under the stars. It has \u2018winner\u2019 all over it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIt has mass suicide all over it,\u201d Jo replied. \u201cHyperthermia and food poisoning.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThink of the low overheads. We could bring Wonder Boy in to teach them how to skin a rabbit or two, a bit of camp-fire bonhomie and all that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHattie, will you please be serious. My son is currently on his way to the other side of the world, where he\u2019ll be exposed to any amount of danger; he\u2019s emotionally vulnerable and I\u2019m worried about him.\u201d<\/p>\n Hattie sat up and opened her eyes.<\/p>\n \u201cOh, get a grip,\u201d she said. \u201cCan you imagine what he\u2019s getting paid for this stint? How can he possibly go wrong? They\u2019ll have him stripped down to his six-pack before the opening credits have run. He won\u2019t even need to open his mouth and the phone lines will be pulsating as fast as every female viewer\u2019s heart. Your Zach has made his finest career move yet.\u201d Hattie reached for Jo\u2019s empty mug. \u201cGet that grumpy expression off yer face and let\u2019s send him good luck wishes for his arrival in Aus.\u201d She stood and glanced at the group in the garden. \u201cPerhaps we can get that lot to send him a mystical sign…\u201d<\/p>\n As Jo watched Hattie walk away, she felt cross.
