Ye gods,<\/em> but her ladyship needed more maids, and a couple more footmen with both arms and both legs, at least for this type of fetching and carrying.<\/p>\n

Ameline chided herself for being insensitive and balanced the steaming bucket. She set down the lamp momentarily to gather her skirts, along with the lamp handle.<\/p>\n

A pair of men\u2019s boots moved into view and the lamp bobbled. Fine boots they were.<\/p>\n

She sighed, gritting her teeth. Lord Hackwell\u2019s visits had unnerved his lady, and Ameline had counseled him to leave.<\/p>\n

Very well, she\u2019d thrown him out, once almost literally. He would wonder what she<\/em> was doing below stairs. He might send for the accoucheur he was mumbling about, and his lady would not like it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve just popped down to the kitchen for a word with Alton, my lord,\u201d she said. \u201cAll is going well, except he\u2019s a bit short on staff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have noticed that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The skin on her back rippled and she shivered. This wasn\u2019t Hackwell\u2014it was him<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Panic flared in her and her hands and ankles began to tingle. He carried no light. She let her own lantern dip lower and stepped to one side. What was he doing on the servants\u2019 staircase in the middle of the night?<\/p>\n

If he saw her, he would<\/em> remember her, but he would not want<\/em> to, unless he would think to befriend<\/em> her again. Heat flamed in her.<\/p>\n

She took in a breath. \u201cLet me pass, Lord Hackwell<\/em>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me carry that bucket for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d She forced in another breath, willing herself to speak calmly. \u201cThat is, no thank you. I shall send a servant for you when it is time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Footsteps scurried on the stairs. \u201cMrs. Dawes?\u201d Jenny called, breathless.<\/p>\n

Her heart raced again. She\u2019d tarried too long in the kitchen. \u201cI\u2019ll be right\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

Heat touched her hand as the bucket came out. The lantern, too, lifted higher, and she looked up into the face of Lord Virgil Radcliffe, now the latest Lord Wallenford.<\/p>\n

\u201cMrs<\/em>. Dawes<\/em>?\u201d His eyes widened and then narrowed, and his lips curved down.<\/p>\n

Anger spiked in her. \u201cLord<\/em> Wallenford<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He moved down to the step below her, putting them at eye level, and crowded her against the hand rail.<\/p>\n

\u201cGive me the bucket, sir. I can manage quite well without your help.\u201d Quite, quite well.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you, indeed?\u201d he drawled, sounding just like his brother the day he\u2019d sacked her.<\/p>\n

Blast him. Blast the Wallenfords. Blast the Hackwells. \u201cAlton has a bottle set out. Best go and fetch it.\u201d<\/p>\n

His lips quirked.<\/p>\n

She gritted her teeth. \u201cGive me the blasted bucket, Virgil.\u201d<\/p>\n
