Daniel\u2019s eyes flickered away from Charlie for a second. \u2018Come on, baby, come out,\u2019 he said to the daughter, who was standing hesitantly on the top step. \u2018It\u2019s safe now.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Yeah, come on, baby,\u2019 Charlie mimicked. \u2018Come and join the party.\u2019<\/p>\n

Charlie stepped sideways, allowing the girl to exit, her eyes like a terrified Bambi\u2019s and shaking as much as Danny boy, poor cow. Must be hereditary.<\/p>\n

\u2018Give me a shout if you fancy another quick shag, sweetheart,\u2019 Charlie called as she stepped onto the towpath.<\/p>\n

A tic went at the side of Daniel\u2019s mouth. He walked calmly over to Charlie and smiled, which had Charlie momentarily flummoxed, then pulled back the gun and rammed it hard into his stomach.<\/p>\n

Matthew flinched as Charlie doubled up. \u2018Ouch,\u2019 he said under his breath. \u2018Okay, Daniel,\u2019 he said carefully. \u2018I know how you must be feeling but you need to let him go now. He\u2019ll get what\u2019s\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018You have no fucking idea how I feel,\u2019 Daniel shouted, glancing quickly at Jo. \u2018The only way that bastard goes anywhere is feet first.\u2019 He raked a hand angrily though his hair. \u2018Got that, Charlie? Now, get down on your knees.\u2019<\/p>\n

Charlie looked up, astonished. \u2018You must be joking. I ain\u2019t\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Do I look as if I\u2019m joking?\u2019 Daniel asked, his eyes burning with hatred.<\/p>\n

\u2018For fuck\u2019s sake,\u2019 Charlie uttered, turning to Matthew, his hands nursing his stomach.<\/p>\n

\u2018On your knees, Charlie,\u2019 Daniel repeated. \u2018Now!\u2019<\/p>\n

Matthew dearly wished he could turn a blind eye as Roberts blinked at him beseechingly, and scared witless, satisfyingly. Unfortunately, as much as he would relish seeing the abusive piece of scum get a taste of his own, he couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u2018You need to drop the gun, Daniel,\u2019 he said, moving cautiously towards the boat. \u2018Leave him to me and get your wife and child\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Don\u2019t,\u2019 Daniel warned, his eyes and the gun still fixed on Roberts. \u2018Back off.\u2019<\/p>\n

Matthew hesitated, uncertain. God knows, the man had every reason to \u2026 But was Conner actually going to shoot Roberts?<\/p>\n

\u2018I can\u2019t do that, Daniel.\u2019 Matthew stepped closer. \u2018You know I can\u2019t.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Stay!\u2019 Daniel shouted, swinging the gun around, then fast back to Charlie. \u2018And you,\u2019 he grated, \u2018down on your knees, while you still can.\u2019 He aimed the gun lower, which had Charlie dropping to his knees, fast.<\/p>\n

\u2018Get them out of here,\u2019 Matthew shouted, indicating Jo and Kayla over his shoulder. Roberts had pushed Conner right over the edge. He bloody well was going to shoot him. Christ, hadn\u2019t this family already been through enough?<\/p>\n

\u2018Daniel \u2026\u2019 Warning himself to tread carefully, empathising with the man more than he could possibly know, Matthew tried again. \u2018You can\u2019t take the law into your own hands.\u2019 He stopped and waited, wondering whether Daniel, who was now swaying on his feet, could even hear him. \u2018You have to do this the legal way. Please, give me the gun, Daniel.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Can\u2019t.\u2019 Daniel closed one eye.<\/p>\n

Matthew took a breath and stepped closer. \u2018Why can\u2019t you, Daniel?\u2019 he asked quietly.<\/p>\n

\u2018Three, two, one,\u2019 Daniel replied, nonsensically.<\/p>\n

\u2018Right.\u2019 Matthew was scared for him now. If he used that gun with police marksmen aiming right at him \u2026 \u2018Which means what, exactly, Daniel?\u2019<\/p>\n

Daniel shrugged. \u2018Bang.\u2019 He concentrated his aim.<\/p>\n

\u2018Fuck,\u2019 said Charlie, turning a pale shade of white. \u2018Don\u2019t, Danny,\u2019 he pleaded.<\/p>\n

Daniel cocked the gun.<\/p>\n

\u2018Look, I didn\u2019t touch your daughter\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Shut the fuck up!\u2019 Daniel yelled.<\/p>\n

\u2018I didn\u2019t. I swear I didn\u2019t.\u2019 Perspiration broke out on Charlie\u2019s forehead. \u2018Danny, please. I\u2019m sorry. Okay? I\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018The name\u2019s Daniel, not Danny. Not fucking Danny boy. Daniel! Got it?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Yeah,\u2019 Charlie nodded quickly. \u2018Daniel. Whatever. Just put the gun down.\u2019<\/p>\n

Daniel continued to stare at him.<\/p>\n

\u2018Shit. This is nuts.\u2019 Charlie looked desperately to Matthew. \u2018Do something! Don\u2019t let them go!\u2019 He nodded past him, to where the man\u2019s wife and daughter weren\u2019t being persuaded to leave. \u2018He won\u2019t do anything in front of them.\u2019<\/p>\n

That\u2019s probably the first, and might well be the last, time you\u2019ve said anything sensible in your entire life, you piece of shit. Matthew looked him over derisively. Conner cared about his family. They\u2019d endured too much to go through any more. He must know it.<\/p>\n

Matthew drew in a breath and then took a gamble. \u2018Okay, Daniel. Fine. Do it,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Charlie gawked.<\/p>\n

\u2018Go ahead. Blow his brains all over the boat if it will make you feel better.\u2019 Matthew paused for an instant. \u2018And leave your wife wondering why you did it in front of your daughter. Whether to visit you in prison, when you didn\u2019t care enough about her, or Kayla, not to.\u2019<\/p>\n

Daniel tightened his grip on the gun.<\/p>\n

His hands were shaking, Matthew noticed. Shaking badly.<\/p>\n

\u2018I have kids of my own, Daniel,\u2019 he said softly, taking another careful step towards him.<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s shoulders stiffened.<\/p>\n

\u2018I know you lost your little girl, Daniel.\u2019 Seeing Daniel reel on his feet, Matthew pushed on and prayed. He needed to get through to him. Had to.<\/p>\n

\u2018You think I can\u2019t know how you feel, but \u2026 I lost my little girl too, Daniel,\u2019 he confided, though it almost choked him to say it. \u2018I do know at least some of how you feel.\u2019<\/p>\n

Still Daniel didn\u2019t move, but Matthew saw a swallow slide down his throat.<\/p>\n

\u2018That bastard has piled pain on top of pain, hasn\u2019t he?\u2019 Matthew kept going, touching raw nerves, he was well aware of that, but what other choice did he have? \u2018Persecuted Kayla and Joanne? Taunted them. Touched them, Daniel?\u2019<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

\u2018Dared you to do anything about it, so he could revel in his pathetic power and beat you senseless? I know him,\u2019 Matthew said forcefully. \u2018He\u2019ll get what\u2019s coming to him. But you have to stop this. Now, Daniel. For the sake of your wife and daughter. Show them you care enough not to put them through this.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018Jesus!\u2019 Daniel leaned to wipe his perspiring face against his shoulder. \u2018Of course I care!\u2019 he raged frustrated, and obviously confused. \u2018But he\u2019ll get out, won\u2019t he?\u2019<\/p>\n

A sharp cough rattled his chest.<\/p>\n

\u2018Jo and my kids are my life. Jo and Kayla \u2026 Were my \u2026 I \u2026\u2019 Trailing off, Daniel closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

And lowered the gun.<\/p>\n

\u2018Hah.\u2019 Charlie levered himself to his feet. \u2018No bottle. Knew it. I\u2019ll catch up with you when I\u2019m out, Danny boy.\u2019 He smirked, as Matthew climbed on board. \u2018Keep that pretty wife of yours warm for me, won\u2019t you?\u2019<\/p>\n

Daniel brought the gun back up sharp. \u2018Say your fucking prayers, freak,\u2019 he hissed.<\/p>\n
