\u201cYes, I spoke to your father. My name is Mattie Winston. I\u2019m the present keeper of the Winston Estate. It\u2019s my job to show you how to be the new keeper.\u201d<\/p>\n

The term puzzled Amber. \u201cKeeper? Keeper of what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy of the estate!\u201d The woman appeared shocked by the question.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeeper of the estate? What does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t worry.\u201d Mattie repositioned herself on the couch and patted nervously at her hair for stray strands. \u201cWe\u2019ll have plenty of time to talk later. You\u2019ve traveled a long way and must be tired and hungry.\u201d She pointed to a platter of little triangle sandwiches on the coffee table. \u201cPlease help yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

She leaned forward and picked up a glass.<\/p>\n

Amber\u2019s stomach growled. Other than a donut on the way out of her apartment, she\u2019d not eaten much over the course of the day.<\/p>\n

With a small sandwich in her hand, Amber considered Mattie\u2019s comment and pressed the issue. \u201cWhat exactly is a keeper? I thought I was supposed to inherit the estate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, well, the keeper is also the person who takes care of the trust fund, which includes the estate.\u201d The lady\u2019s hands didn\u2019t settle. They fluttered in her lap without finding a resting place.<\/p>\n

Her apparent anxiety confused Amber. She couldn\u2019t figure out a reason for her nervousness. But sympathy for the lady enticed Amber into changing the subject. \u201cHow long have you lived here?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve lived in Ohio all my life. But I\u2019ve lived in Winston Manor for about thirty years.\u201d Mattie\u2019s mouth broke into a small, almost shy smile.<\/p>\n

Strange after thirty years, why switch the family keeper, or caretaker or whatever they called them? The lady didn\u2019t look old.<\/p>\n

Why leave? Did her family want to move? \u201cDoes anyone else live here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mattie paused for a long moment. \u201cWell, there are a few others around.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you married?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that part of the keeper\u2019s job\u2014not to be married?\u201d<\/p>\n
