I’m remiss this year in getting an online Burns Day celebration together. Shame on me. But, I have a valid excuse. I’ve had my head down working on my next novella. If you go by word length, it does qualify as a full-fledged novel, but that’s neither here nor there.<\/p>\n

\nJanuary 25, 1759 – July 21, 1796<\/h2>\n

It’s Robbie Burns Day. Will you celebrate the bard today with haggis, champit tatties and bashed neeps?<\/p>\n

Here at The House of King, we’ll be having a toned down version of\u00a0previous Burns Night celebrations. Although I don’t have a wee haggis, I do have some\u00a0frozen sliced haggis (great with\u00a0a Scottish breakfast) so it will do, especially since I’m the only one who\u00a0truly enjoys eating it here. I made Cock-a-leekie soup shortly after Christmas and it’s in the freezer and for\u00a0the toasts to the lads and lassies afterwards, I have a bottles of 18-year old Glenlivet and Cardhu.<\/p>\n

The “Guest of Honour”<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Address To A Haggis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
\nGreat chieftain o’ the puddin-race!
\nAboon them a’ ye tak your place,
\nPainch, tripe, or thairm:
\nWeel are ye wordy o’ a grace
\nAs lang’s my arm.<\/p>\n

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
\nYour hurdies like a distant hill,
\nYour pin wad help to mend a mill
\nIn time o’ need,
\nWhile thro’ your pores the dews distil
\nLike amber bead.<\/p>\n

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
\nAn’ cut you up wi’ ready sleight,
\nTrenching your gushing entrails bright,
\nLike ony ditch;
\nAnd then, O what a glorious sight,
\nWarm-reekin, rich!<\/p>\n

Then, horn for horn,
\nthey stretch an’ strive:
\nDeil tak the hindmost! on they drive,
\nTill a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve,
\nAre bent lyke drums;
\nThen auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
\n“Bethankit!” ‘hums.<\/p>\n

Is there that owre his French ragout
\nOr olio that wad staw a sow,
\nOr fricassee wad mak her spew
\nWi’ perfect sconner,
\nLooks down wi’ sneering, scornfu’ view
\nOn sic a dinner?<\/p>\n

Poor devil! see him ower his trash,
\nAs feckless as a wither’d rash,
\nHis spindle shank, a guid whip-lash,
\nHis nieve a nit;
\nThro’ bloody flood or field to dash,
\nO how unfit!<\/p>\n

But mark the Rustic, haggis fed,
\nThe trembling earth resounds his tread.
\nClap in his walie nieve a blade,
\nHe’ll mak it whissle;
\nAn’ legs an’ arms, an’ heads will sned,
\nLike taps o’ thrissle.<\/p>\n

Ye Pow’rs wha mak mankind your care,
\nAnd dish them out their bill o’ fare,
\nAuld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
\nThat jaups in luggies;
\nBut, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer,
\nGie her a haggis!<\/p>\n
