The Golden Age of Hollywood, 1938<\/strong>. It’s the annual Awards Banquet at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub, and Vivian Steele can\u2019t wait for the star-studded event. She\u2019s attending with her best friend, Carole Lombard, and several acclaimed actresses will be wearing her fashion designs. What she doesn\u2019t expect is for the night to turn deadly.<\/p>\n

During the awards ceremony, Carole finds an actress stabbed to death in the restroom. She quickly alerts the staff, but when they return, they can\u2019t find a body. An hour later, another guest screams bloody murder that an actor drowned in the pool outside. Again, the body disappears.<\/p>\n

While the guests have a good laugh, Vivian is convinced the murders took place and reluctantly asks Preston Stone, Hollywood’s notorious playboy, for his help in proving her suspicions.<\/p>\n

Together, they uncover a sinister killer who has mastered the art of illusion and set his sights on two Oscar-winning stars. Can Vivian and Preston stop the killer in time…and without revealing their well-kept secrets?<\/p>\n

As Vivian sipped her coffee, someone tapped on the front door.\u00a0 She had half a mind to ignore the person.\u00a0 It was only ten minutes after eight on a Sunday morning, and the boutique was closed until Tuesday.\u00a0 Then she heard an all-too-familiar voice followed by a loud howl.<\/p>\n

She was livid.\u00a0 \u201cI told you to call me at nine o\u2019clock, Preston!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless you want Boris to wake the neighbors, I suggest you open the door,\u201d he shouted back.<\/p>\n

With a groan nearly loud enough to wake the neighbors, Vivian gathered her drawings, flipped them upside down on the table, and stormed into the display room.\u00a0 She opened the door just a crack and peeked out.<\/p>\n

Preston grinned at her.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m ninety-nine percent sure the whole thing was a hoax last night, but I didn\u2019t want to make a final decision until you told me what happened in the restroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes narrowed.\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t do that.\u00a0 It\u2019s not my story to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s very gallant of you.\u00a0 All right, let\u2019s turn this around.\u00a0 Why don\u2019t I show you what I found in the pool, and maybe you\u2019ll change your mind?\u00a0 Before we get into that, here\u2019s the complete guest list from last night.\u201d\u00a0 He stuck a sheet of paper through the crack.<\/p>\n

Vivian took it from him and skimmed through it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMissus Eleanor Peterson is the woman who claimed she saw a dead man in the pool.\u00a0 She was married to Charles Peterson, a movie director at Paramount.\u00a0 He died of a heart attack a year ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you find at the pool?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was in<\/em> the pool.\u00a0 Do I smell coffee?\u201d<\/p>\n

Boris started pushing on the door, trying to squeeze himself inside, so Vivian opened it.\u00a0 \u201cThere\u2019s a fresh pot in the backroom.\u201d\u00a0 She patted Boris on the head.\u00a0 \u201cBella is next door, but she should be home soon.\u201d\u00a0 They walked through the display room, and she told Preston to have a seat.\u00a0 She filled a bowl of water for Boris and put a few bite-sized Milk-Bones on the floor for him.\u00a0 When she finished, she poured Preston a cup of coffee.\u00a0 \u201cOkay, tell me what you found in the pool?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter you left the nightclub, I went back to search the patio,\u201d he told her.\u00a0 \u201cLo and behold, there was a striped necktie wrapped around the ladder in the deep end of the pool.\u00a0 It was floating in the water.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vivian set the coffee cup down in front of him.\u00a0 \u201cThe woman mistook the tie for a dead body?\u201d<\/p>\n
