I might have taken umbrage, but for the fact that my domestic Goddess gene wasn\u2019t so much deficient, as it died, probably at birth. A slave in the kitchen I was not. Slut in the bedroom I could do. Or would quite like to. Somehow, though, I doubted the new man in my life would want to make mad passionate love to the girl who\u2019d just killed off his mother.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cHonestly, Lisa\u2026\u201d Becky sighed. \u201cIt has to be cooked before you shred it. You can\u2019t shred raw chicken, can you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>She was taking the pee now. \u201cObviously,\u201d I dripped, indignant, though there was a good possibility I might have tried.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cAnd make sure it\u2019s a happy chicken.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cRi-ght.\u201d I paused to ponder. \u201cCooked and shredded, I should think it\u2019ll be highly amused.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cOh, ha-di-ha.\u201d Becky didn\u2019t sound impressed. \u201cI meant, an organic chicken, plucked and without giblets. Wash it under cold water, then place the whole chicken in a big pot, cover it with water, and bring it to boil over a high heat.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cBy which time it will be positively ecstatic.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Silence.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cAhem. High heat, got you. Go on.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cMake sure it doesn\u2019t boil over,\u201d Becky continued, after an audible humph. \u201cOnce it\u2019s boiling, you can turn down the heat. Let the bird cook for at least one hour and then check if it comes off the bone easily. If not, turn off the heat and leave it in the pot until it does. Depending on the size of the bird, this might take a bit longer.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cBecky, slow down!\u201d I scrawled frenziedly and tried to keep up.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cRight, got it. I think. Next?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Becky emitted another despairing sigh. \u201cOrder a takeaway.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cSorry?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cNever mind.\u201d She sighed \u2014 again, pointedly. \u201cRepeat back what I\u2019ve just said.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cHold on.\u201d I turned to kick the back door closed before I got frostbite, then grabbed up the saucepan containing the culinary catastrophe I might have poisoned new man Adam and his mum with \u2014 and tipped it in the dog dish.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>Then padded back across the kitchen and fell over the dog.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cOoh, God! Three cups shredded cooked\u2026 absolutely delighted \u2026chicken!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>I snapped, straightening up from the work surface, which mercifully broke my fall before I parted company with my teeth. \u201cGood boy, Rambo,\u201d I cooed, more sweetly. \u201cDin dins, hon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>My midget Jack Russell looked at me, looked at the dish \u2014 wherein floated a monkfish head, sniffed it, curled a lip, I would swear, then beat a hasty retreat to the hall.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cWhat else?\u201d I asked after the next ingredient, while heaving out a sigh of my own, then trying hard not to breathe back in. The Bouillabaisse \u2014 traditional Proven\u00e7al fish stew (Easy Fish recipe book now in trash) \u2014 I\u2019d decided to serve for the brunch Adam had invited himself and his mother to, smelled horribly pungent while cooking. Burned, it could strip the lining from your lungs. I shudder to think what it would do to your digestive tract.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cPatience, lots of\u2026 on my part,\u201d Becky went on wearily, \u201cone cup thinly sliced celery, half a cup thinly sliced green onions, half a cup chopped, salted roasted pistachios\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cPistachios?! Where am I supposed to get\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cKitchen cupboard, right hand side. At least, that\u2019s where they were at Christmas.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cOh, right.\u201d I nodded and wondered whether I should also do an inventory of my kitchen cupboards\u2026 sometime.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cNext\u2026\u201d Becky went on efficiently: \u201c\u2026a quarter cup of fresh chopped mint leaves. And, yes, you have got some,\u201d she assured me. \u201cYou bought it when you got the parsley and thyme for the Bouillabaisse. You\u2019ll also need \u2026 two cups cooked couscous. If you like, you can use Bulgur or rice instead.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cIs that it?\u201d I asked, feeling overwhelmed by the task ahead as well as odious smells.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em>\u201cFor the salad, yes.
