\u201cWhat the hell is going on here?\u201d I hissed, trying to prevent others from hearing our exchange.
\n\u201cOh, Sophie, Dan\u2019s turned up. Isn\u2019t it amazing?\u201d she beamed at me.
\n\u201cI can see that,\u201d I kept hissing, \u201cBut what is he doing here?\u201d
\nRachel was quite drunk herself and looked at me with those bleary eyes that usually meant she was up to no good. \u201cSophie,\u201d she declared solemnly and rather loudly, \u201cyou have broken the man\u2019s heart. He has come to reclaim you.\u201d She wobbled unsteadily and I gripped her arm. Usually one to hold her liquor, party-girl Rachel had clearly gone too far tonight.
\n\u201cShh!\u201d I admonished. \u201cWill you keep your voice down? What are you talking about?\u201d
\n\u201cDan is completely besotted with you, and he said he couldn\u2019t bear the thought of you getting engaged to Tim so he had to\u2026hic\u2026come and check him out\u2026hic!\u201d Oh God, she had the hiccups. She would have to spend the night in the guest room. Once Rachel got the hiccups, she was beyond salvation. I gave her twenty minutes before she collapsed. I had to extract critical information fast.
\n\u201cWhy did you introduce him to Tim?\u201d I continued my interrogation. \u201cCouldn\u2019t you have sent him away?\u201d
\n\u201cOh no, Sophie. I couldn\u2019t turn this lovely, heartbroken man away.\u201d She looked at me with big, innocent, and totally unfocused eyes. \u201cIn fact, we were just looking for you. You seemed to have\u2026 hic\u2026 hic\u2026 hic\u2026disapp-hic-eared.\u201d
\n\u201cWhat did you say to Tim about who Dan was?\u201d I needed to know.
\n\u201cThat he was Dan, of course. Your boy-hic-friend from Tusk!\u201d She dropped this bombshell completely nonchalantly.
\n\u201cYou what?\u201d I squeaked. \u201cPlease tell me you\u2019re joking.\u201d
\n\u201cNo, I\u2019m s-hic-erious! Ti-hic-im thought it was very funny. Hic.\u201d
\nI wrung my hands and barely prevented myself from tearing at my hair. If Tim had thought it was funny, he must have thought Rachel was being facetious or winding him up. He had seen her drunk before \u2014 the experience hadn\u2019t done anything to endear her to him in any way \u2014so it was likely that he hadn\u2019t paid the slightest bit of heed to the truth she was spouting. But I had to move, and fast.
\n\u201cYou,\u201d I said to Rachel, grabbing her by the shoulders and steering her toward the stairs. \u201cYou have had enough to drink. You are going to bed.\u201d
\n\u201cI hic-am?\u201d Rachel asked, surprised.
\n\u201cIndeed,\u201d I confirmed grimly and marched her up the stairs. \u201cRight, here you are. Guest room. Bed. Now.\u201d I propelled her forward and she flopped on the bed like a rag doll.
\n\u201cVery ti-hic-hic-red,\u201d she mumbled before passing out.
\nI, on the other hand, had sobered up dramatically and had only one thought left: damage limitation. I blundered back downstairs, racing quite unladylike in my high heels, and skidded to a halt in the lounge. There they were, companionably sitting in front of the stereo, playing DJ.
\nI clattered across the floor, grabbing a bottle of champers and three glasses off a table as I went. Tim looked up, and then sprang to his feet.
\n\u201cAnd here she is,\u201d he announced to Dan with no small measure of proprietary pride. \u201cDoesn\u2019t she look gorgeous?\u201d
\nDan rose to his feet, somewhat unsteadily, and looked me up and down. A sad smile played on his face for just the briefest of moments.
\n\u201cShe looks stunning, indeed. Congratulations to you both.\u201d He walked over to me and planted a chaste kiss on my cheek. \u201cWell done,\u201d he said softly, and Tim beamed gratefully, completely unaware that the comment was aimed solely at me. In fact, he seemed completely besotted by Dan\u2019s manly, famous presence.
\n\u201cDan here and I were just discussing rock music,\u201d he informed me as though Dan were his new best friend.
\nI shuddered for a moment. God forbid.
\n\u201cDan has some very interesting views about the movement, you know?\u201d
\nI winced and smiled a secret apologetic smile at Dan, but he was too drunk to notice anything patronizing in Tim\u2019s comment. I had to separate the two before things got out of hand. Luckily, one of our other guests absolved me of thinking up more ruses by descending on Tim and whisking him away to the kitchen.
\nDan and I regarded each other in silence.
\n\u201cYou do look beautiful,\u201d Dan repeated, suddenly sounding a whole lot more sober.
\nI wanted to cry. \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d I whispered, not trusting my voice.
\n\u201cI don\u2019t really know,\u201d he acknowledged. \u201cI just felt\u2026lonely. At a loose end. I had to see you and convince myself that\u2026well, that it really is too late. You know?\u201d
\nI was simultaneously touched and petrified. \u201cI thought we\u2019d agreed\u2026,\u201d I started, but Dan interrupted immediately.<\/p>\n
