Through Time

SECRETS THROUGH TIME Connects a Fire-Scarred Ghost Town to a Living Family’s World. Melanie Robertson-King’s novel brings whispers, an unsettling portrait and an unexplained exodus into a mystery rooted in the ruins of Milford Manor.

BROCKVILLE, ON — OCTOBER 19, 2026

A town destroyed by fire and a manor that still holds its secrets draw Nicole into a tragedy connected to her own world in SECRETS THROUGH TIME by Melanie Robertson-King. Set amid the remains of Milford Hollow, the novel brings a haunted place into the present through a woman whose encounter with its history becomes more than an exploration of abandoned ruins.

Nicole, her brothers and her husband stumble upon the forgotten ghost town and are drawn to its only standing building, Milford Manor. The crumbling stone shell survived a fire that consumed the surrounding settlement, despite the closeness of Little Lake.
Rumours surround the disaster, but destruction alone does not explain the town’s abandonment: something unexplainable also drove away the people who survived the inferno.

Within the manor’s scorched walls, Nicole senses a presence. Whispers drift through the halls, while a faded family portrait seems to watch her movements. Her search into the building’s past uncovers a tragedy linking her world with the secrets of a family long dead. That connection gives the mystery a personal dimension, bringing the lives behind the portrait into a story that reaches beyond the ruined house.

The setting offers a specific point of interest for readers drawn to ghost towns and haunted buildings. Milford Manor is not an intact estate standing apart from a thriving community; it is the last structure left in a place largely erased by catastrophe. Its damaged
walls make the fire’s destruction visible, while the nearby lake adds a troubling detail to the rumours surrounding the blaze.

The mystery also separates two questions that might otherwise seem inseparable: what happened to Milford Hollow, and why did its survivors leave? The fire accounts for the ruins, but the unexplained departure leaves another uncertainty behind. This distinction gives the town’s history a broader reach than the fate of a single building, placing the manor’s haunting within the aftermath of a community’s
destruction.

For readers interested in supernatural mysteries and buried family histories, the book combines an investigation of the past with unsettling signs in the present. Its haunting takes shape through sound, a sensed presence and an ordinary family image made
disturbing. The portrait gives the mystery a human focus alongside the physical devastation. Rather than leaving the dead as distant figures in a forgotten town, SECRETS THROUGH TIME connects their secrets to Nicole’s world, making the boundary between past
and present central to its suspense.

Melanie Robertson-King is the author of SECRETS THROUGH TIME, a novel of haunting and buried family secrets.

For Ria Joyce, love belongs in the past. But when she spots her ex-boyfriend Jon Donnelly via the Dublin-New York Portal, she wonders if it’s fate. Especially as it falls on her late husband’s anniversary, just before Christmas.

Then her daughter Amelie posts a photo of Jon, snapped at the Portal, together with a plea to help find him and, to Ria’s horror, the post goes viral.

When Nick Newland, host of the popular podcast, Sex and the Single Dad, asks Ria to appear on his show, she reluctantly agrees. And after Jon, AKA American thriller writer JL Walker, gets in touch, Nick sweeps her off to New York, to document the reunion for his hit podcast.

There, old feelings resurface. Amid twinkling lights, snowy streets and reawakened memories, Jon offers a second chance. But the mistakes of the past must be confronted before she can move forward into an unexpected future.

Will Ria take the ultimate leap of faith this Christmas?

My Review

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I’ve never been to the area where the author set it, but I’ve read others set there. It felt like I was coming home.

We meet a new Detective Constable (Gavin Piper), transferred to the area temporarily to aid his superior officer, not to investigate a murder.  As crime books go, there is always at least one murder, and usually more.

The author spun a tale as much about the crime as about the area.

This is the first book in this spin-off of the DI Kay Hunter series, so I was especially happy to know that. This is a series I’ll be reading. I’m so hooked; I can’t wait for the second book.

What She Did by Lauren Dykovitz

What She Did is Lauren Dykovitz’s latest book. And she’s another new-to-me author.

Blurb

Liz has been watching the neighbors. One of them has noticed.

Liz McAdams knows a lot about her neighbors. Recently divorced, with time on her hands, she amuses herself by observing them as she walks her dog past their houses. And no life looks more wonderful than Sabrina Thompson’s. Beautiful, wealthy, married to a gorgeous husband, Sabrina seems to have it all.

But one day Liz sees something through Sabrina’s bedroom window – something that could blow her seemingly perfect marriage apart.
Liz is shocked and intrigued. She herself has always played by the rules and now she can’t help envying Sabrina’s reckless abandon as she risks everything for her own pleasure.

Fascinated, she starts to watch Sabrina’s every move. And soon realizes that her glamorous neighbor has some very dark secrets.

Then there is a chilling murder on this affluent street, and Liz wonders if Sabrina could be involved. Even more disturbing, Sabrina seems to have noticed that Liz has been shadowing her.

Leaving Liz with two terrifying questions – Is Sabrina a killer?

And what might she do to the woman who knows too much?

My Review

This book was a fairly easy read, told in alternating points of view from Sabrina, an unhappily married woman, and Liz, a recently divorced woman.

The only cringe-worthy bit about the book was the way Sabrina talked about her husband, Gavin (Gavey-poo), and another man, Ben (Benny-boo). But for Sabrina, that was totally in character for her.

The book left me wondering what would happen and to whom, but I didn’t see that last twist coming.

Overall, it was a good read.

A young woman has been found dead in a flat above a betting shop on Frederick Street.

By the time Hunter arrives, it’s clear this wasn’t a crime of passion.

The victim has been beaten beyond recognition. The tips of her fingers are missing. The kitchen floor is soaked red with her blood.

Someone wanted to make sure she could never be identified.

But that’s not what stops Hunter in his tracks.

Excerpt

DI Hunter Wilson looked at the time on his phone before he answered the call. 4.03am. If this was some comedian from the sub-continent calling to tell him about putting in a claim for the accident he hadn’t had… Then he noticed it was Cameron calling him.

“What’s the matter, son? This is a hell of a time to phone.” Hunter whispered.

“I didn’t know who else to call.”

“What’s the matter? And it had better be good.”

“It’s far from good.” Cameron told his father of the scene that had met him and his new friends when they got back to his flat.

“She’s had what cut off? Bloody hell!”

“I know, Dad, I know. And her head has been bashed in too. What do I do?”

“Well, now we have Police Scotland in place there is a Major Incidents Team, imaginatively know as MIT, that deals with cases like this.”

“Oh, Dad no! The other girls’ll go mental. You come. Please? At least at first. I need your help.”

Hunter thought back to the days when Cameron used to ask for his help regularly: tying his shoelaces, drying him after swimming, learning to ride a bike. Those had been the golden years. It had been a long, long time since his son had sounded so desperate and pleaded for his help. It made Hunter feel good. He could help Cameron again. Brilliant!

“You’re not back on the cocaine are you, Cameron? You’re not hallucinating?” Hunter said suddenly.

“No, I’m bloody not! But thanks for the vote of confidence. Believe me, I will be if you don’t get your arse over here pronto!”

“And that’s how you ask for help from your dad? A favour? Stuff you!” Hunter shouted back.

“What is it?” a bleary voice beside Hunter said.

“Please, Dad. Just come. I need you.” Cameron sounded like a little boy about to burst into tears. “Another person’s in my flat too. I’ve never seen her before. Just come, quickly, please Dad! I can’t tell you how awful it all is here.”

Hunter got out of bed and patted Meera’s arm. “Go back to sleep, pet. I’ve got to go and see Cameron. It’s an emergency.”

“At four o’clock in the morning? What’s wrong? Is he using again?”

“No. But he was out for the evening and got back to his home to find his flat mate dead on the floor”

“Why does he need you? Shouldn’t he call an ambulance?” Meera asked.

“It’s a bit late for that. She’s been mutilated; her head has been bashed in and the tops of her fingers cut off.”

“I’d guess she’s probably dead, right enough. But doesn’t Cameron need me more than he needs you? I’m coming with you,” Meera said in a determined voice that brooked no contradiction.

Secrets on the Fells by Cath Staincliffe

Today at Celtic Connexions, I’m reviewing Secrets on the Fells by Cath Staincliffe. The best part of being a blog tour host is discovering new authors and their books.

Cath StaincliffeBlurb

One bitter winter’s night, Detectives Donovan and Young are called to Fountains Abbey. A crumbling ruin out on the wild and windswept Yorkshire Fells. Where the air hangs heavy with local legend, ancient secrets and now the overpowering tang of freshly spilled blood.

College teacher Patrick Armitage lies sprawled across the stones, in a gory crimson pool. His handsome face is a mask of shock and disbelief.

Because Patrick’s not just been murdered. He’s been slaughtered. Stabbed over and over in the coldest blood.

Patrick was a devoted family man and everyone’s favourite drama teacher. Does that make him a tragic victim — or a consummate actor, who kept his true self hidden behind a spotless façade?

The deeper Donovan and Young dig, the more they realize that no one in this baffling case is quite what they seem.

Least of all Patrick’s grief-stricken widow. She begs the detectives for answers, but meets every question with hostile silence.

Then a vulnerable young witness vanishes from college.

And Young knows, with spine-tingling certainty, that Patrick’s killer is not done yet…

My Review

While this is the third book in the author’s Donovan and Young series, the author shared enough of the characters’ backstories that I wasn’t confused about their working relationship or their personal ones with their spouses.

The book was fast-paced, and I enjoyed the differences between the two main characters. DC Shan Young is an eager and smart constable assigned to work with DI Leo Donovan.

The novel follows the pair as they unravel a murder at Fountains Abbey. I can’t tell you more without giving away spoilers.

This is definitely a series I’m anxious to read more of.

My Review

This is the first novel I’ve read by Charlie Gallagher. It didn’t disappoint. Now, I think I need to get the first two in this series so I can catch up.

It was fast-paced, the characters were likable, and there were enough red herrings to keep me guessing until the reveal. I will admit, I didn’t see it coming.

I’ll definitely be looking for more books by this author.
